Mehr Als Schein - Αυτό Που Φαίνεται

MEHR ALS SCHEIN / SHINING THROUGH / ΑΥΤΟ ΠΟΥ ΦΑΙΝΕΤΑΙ

Within the framework of Zone D by Zoumboulakis Galleries, the group exhibition "Mehr Als Schein / Shining Through / Αυτό που φαίνεται", curated by visual artist Mark Noll, opens on 17 May 2013 at the new Zoumboulakis Galleries’ building.

The exhibition, in which 19 artists participate (who live and work in Germany, in Greece and in Cyprus), is held in a neoclassical building in Ermou Street near important archeological areas (the Acropolis, the Keramikos ancient cemetery, the Ancient Agora of Athens etc.).

As Mark Noll writes: “Appearances are deceptive, beauty is only skin-deep. Attractive surfaces have often invited suspicion in the intellectual mind and been associated with shallowness or even worse deception. The essential substance - like contents, meaning or truth - on the other hand, is always expected to hide behind the surface.

The show Shining Through is not focusing on the alleged deficit of the surface, but it is aiming to reveal that first of all a surface is an aesthetic phenomenon that does not derive from contents nor serves as mere, superficial decoration. Surface first of all renders a sensual dimension.

It´s the concept of the show to present both Greek and German artists who are preoccupied with the aesthetics of the surface and who are united in their effort to explore how the effect and the appearance of the surface can be reinterpreted in different media.”.

Artists: Alexiou Nikos, Bassanos Kostas, Bitsikas Xenofon, Christopoulos Kostas, Faust Jeanne, Ganas Iannis, Goldschmidt Dorothea, Kailiang Yang, Kelm Katia, Krause Inge, Loizidou Maria, Maike Sander, May Ruth, Noll Mark, Papaconstantinou Nina, Pichler Michalis, Xagoraris Zafos, Zacharioudakis Manolis, Zenner Barbara.

A three lingual (German/Greek/English) special edition will be published by FUTURA Editions within the context of the exhibition, including indicative works and accompanied by texts written by Ludwig Seyfarth and Mark Noll.

Astray

Astray / Egneus, Koutsikos, Vasmoulakis

Zoumboulakis Galleries presented “astray”, a group show by Alexandros Vasmoulakis, Paris Koutsikos and Daniel Egneus, from the 8thNovember until the 8th December 2012.

The word astray depicted in its positive and negative senses. It is a story filtered through the eyes of three artists.

Their intimate relation with places, memories, ideas and their search for love, protection and magic constantly lead them astray in contemporary Athens:

A seductive city disguised in concrete, filled with stray individuals. Wanderers trying to find their identities.

Alexandra Athanassiades

Alexandra Athanassiades’presentation at Zoumboulakis Galleries was a collection of small and large scale metal, wood and resin sculptures accompanied by drawings, prints and collages.

Her work was a natural progression from her recent exhibition at Jean -Jacques Dutko Gallery in Paris, and was presented in Athens from September 18th – October 6th 2012. Nature provides an endless source of materials and inspiration to this artist.

She is constantly on the lookout for pieces of rusty metal, driftwood and discarded items with which she creates a unique type of collage that transforms these objects into recognizable forms such as torsos, horse’s heads and figures.

We can see the influence of pre historic and classical sculpture is reflected strongly in Athanassiades’ work, plus her preoccupation with the temporary and vulnerable aspects of nature and matter. By exploring these themes of vulnerability, fragmentation, nature and transformation she creates a sculptural form that is simple, elegant and complete.  [ source ]

April's Exhibitions

NIKOS MARKOU | Monumenta Naturalia

The new photographic work of Nikos Markou extends the research developed by the artist in his previous shows. He highlights a broader natural reality which surpasses human agony, but without concealing it.

The artist’s aim is not the recognizability of the landscape but he is interested in the inner contemplation. Landscapes of harmony are being composed by elements of chaos and images of deceptive “totality”, are being overturned in their inside by the existence of diverse details, as in the image with the geese. The full moon in the middle of the monochromatic night sky seeks Geometry as basic rule for comprehend-ing the world.

MINDY SHAPERO Blinded by the Light

The Breeder is pleased to present Mindy Shapero’s new exhibition “Blinded by the light” hosted in the gallery from the 7th of April 2012 to the 2nd of June 2012. The exhibition will be introducing sculptures, objects and large paper works giving a manifold outlook on Shapero’s onerous latest creations.

All of her works rotate around a complex mythology she herself created in the last decade. By drawing upon the homonymous Bruce Springsteen song for the title of the exhibition Shapero propositions a narrative intention, a vade mecum for the spectator to follow.

“Blinded by the light” is an imaginary object central to Shapero’s mythology, a talisman so powerful that one goes instantly blind when looking at it with both eyes. The only rescue is to resist the magnetic urge to look at it or to approach it with an eye patch.

Fairy Tales and Lies for Grown-Ups

Zoumboulakis Galleries present “Fairy Tales and Lies for Grown-Ups” the first solo exhibition by Jenny Kodonidou. Small and large scale works painted with different materials compose her “dream-world”.

This fragmentary world constitutes of contemporary symbols, cartoon heroes, animals, human figures which function as references of the global art history (figures from the early-renaissance to rococo).

The paper where the artist draws works as a tracker of stories and of real or unreal worlds. Painting manages to embellish even the ugliest or more irrational side of reality.

Exhibition duration: 12 January to 4 February 2012

Still Life

In the body of work entitled “Still Life” by Ioanna Ralli, presented at Zoumboulakis Galleries, “still life” is photographically approached with the same straightforwardness, tenderness and discernment used by the artist in 2008 in the women portrait series entitled “Archetypes of the feminine”.

“Is still life alive?” This constitutes a valid question as nowadays, still lives do not seem to be a part of contemporary artistic exploration, when the whole world is in turmoil and the news shows us wild lives; hungry and violent. But art continues to showcase “new” still lives on an international level; immaterial, videotaped, photographed, altered, full of passion and personality; “different”.

This exhibition comprises portraits of objects that have emerged from the protection of cupboards to stand, modest or proud, before the lens and confront us, the viewers, and, above all, those of us who are willing to get seriously to grips with their meaning: the so-called “artists with a devoted sight”.

Water

Maria Filopoulou, "Water"

Following the retrospective exhibition at the Hermoupolia 2009 on the island of Syros (where she presented all the chapters of her work from 1989: interiors, staircases, greenhouses, sea and swimmers), Maria Filopoulou presented her new series of works, with waterfalls, at Zoumboulakis Galleries

The liquid element as well as her love for water carries through this new chapter.

An interesting transition from beaches and open horizons to cisterns, waterfalls, magic lands of the Cabeiri mysteries; her inner quest leads the artist to create a personal paradise which she invites the viewer to enter.

Conversational Pace

Zoumboulakis Galleries presented:  Iannis Ganas' recent works under the title “Conversational Pace”,

In the language of long distance runners “conversational pace” is the kind of training that allows one to comfortably hold a conversation while running.

Iannis Ganas, a runner himself, experiences the space of Kalimarmaron stadium through repetition, self-suggestion, fatigue, introspection and the transcendence that comes with running.

Through his works he tries to compose his personal psycho graph as a runner who observes and an artist who runs.
