Calico

Your house was a good one
Though the yard was overgrown
And your shirts were all tailored
And my dresses were all calico

Oh, your bed was always covered
The black pants you wouldn't ware
That was part of the pattern
And it fit just like it should

When I released the spare room
I never sat in front of you
And through the thin wall
We heard our neighbors argue

But I couldn't just shut up and lie
I never let you have your last night

Your house was a good one
Though the yard was overgrown
Your shirts were all tailored
My dresses were all calico

The Search and Little Else

grew up in a maze where I was afraid of the moon
and in the haze of youth I went along to look for you

and it was miles and miles
miles and miles of twist and curve

and it was days and days
days and days with no stone left unturned

and in my younger years I thought I had for myself
an answer for everything at ready given me to help

and in the wilderness I often ran like hell
never to let give in I'm for the search and little else

Fall On Me

There's a problem, feathers, iron
Bargain buildings, weights and pulleys
Feathers hit the ground
Before the weight can leave the air

Buy the sky and sell the sky
And tell the sky, and tell the sky
Fall on me (what is it up in the air for)
Fall on me (if it's there for long)
Fall on me (it's over, it's over me)

There's the progress
We have found a way to talk around the problem
Building towers
Foresight isn't anything at all

Buy the sky and sell the sky
And bleed the sky and tell the sky
Fall on me (what is it up in the air for)
Fall on me (if it's there for long)
Fall on me (it's over, it's over me)
Fall on me

(Well I would keep it above but then it wouldn't be sky any more)
(So if I send it to you you've got to promise to keep it home)

Buy the sky and sell the sky
And lift your arms up to the sky
And ask the sky, and ask the sky
Fall on me (what is it up in the air for)
Fall on me (if it's there for long)
Fall on me (it's over, it's over me)

Drifting Blues

Whoa, I'm so lonesome baby, now
I am in a travelin' mood, yes I am
Whoa, I'm so lonesome now, now, honey
I tell ya I am in a travelin' mood, um, hmm

Guess I'll have to hop a freight to California
'Cause I've got the travelin' blues, yes I have

Sometime I feel like walkin', now, now
Well I have no walkin' shoes, no, no
Well, sometime I feel like walkin', now, now
I tell you I got no walkin' shoes, do you believe me

That's why I've got to hop a freight to California
'Cause I've got the travelin' blues, um, hmm

'Cause I keep drifting and drifting like a ship out on the sea

I keep drifting and drifting, now like a ship out on the sea, well
You see I ain't got no, nobody in this world to care for me

If my baby, if my baby would only take me back again
Oh now if my baby now uh, would only take me back again
Well I may not be good for nothing, baby
But you see I haven't got no friends

Play it, son

I'll give you all my money, now
Tell me what more can I do, I wanna know
(Just give some more, just give some more)
(Just give some more)

I'll give you all my money, little girl
Tell me what more can I do, I've got to know
(just give some more, just give some more)
(Just give some more)

Well, you may be a good little girl sometime
But you just won't be true

Bye, bye baby, now

Well, it's too late to worry
I want you to know
I said, oh, it's too late to cry

1957

Your house that sits behind me
Is covered in ivy green
The windows that we watch from
Are old and chipping at the beam

It takes me away
Takes me away

The scent you wear moves in lines
From your apartment into mine
You act like you don't know me
My god, you tempt my anxious mind

It takes me away
Takes me away

Would it be much better if I knew nothing about you
Would it be much better if I knew nothing about you

I'll go,
I'll go I...

It takes me away
Takes me away

War in heaven

Wait, a war in heaven

Wait, a war in heaven
I hate it when they forget
To let people live

Wait, a war in heaven
I hate it when they forget
To let people live

Slowly we come
There's blood on the chair
In this tender life

Winter Song

The snow on your eyelids that curtsy with age
Is freezing the stares on tyranny's wings.
The bitter is hard and the warmth of your skin
Is diseased with familiar caresses.

Withdrawing from splendor and royal decay
Among all the triumphs and jaded awards
The angry and blazing circus of sun
Blasphemes as the crown prince arises.

You cannot beget all the sins that you owe
To the people of paradise magic
Pretend to answer passion and form
With foreign rationalizations.

Primroses are the jewels that lurk
Among masks of pleasure that flicker with doubt
Embraces of fame that's simultaneously fear
To advance and demand to be recognized.

The river shall flow through hollow green faces
Of caricature's resentment etched out of the tongues.
Both reluctant princess asleep before birth
The classical sensitive failures.

The worshipping wicked cling to the dark of your heart
Lying there and wait with your angels
Moan and ravish from dawn to dusk
The avaricious young lovers.
