Alpha - The play

Alpha - The play

2.500 years ago, Sophocles the Athenian introduces the conflict of a young princess named Antigone who opposes the State’s power in order to bury her dead brother. At that moment, the moment of Democracy’s birth, a question is born that is still unanswered today.

Is human law Justice?

Alpha is a Transmedia Cinematic Performance inspired by the ancient myth of Antigone, by our actual present and by this exact same question posed 2.500 years ago.

Alpha movie and back stage shooting were presented in this blog the previous years (here) . This time we present a small sample of the live performance version of Alpha.

Alpha is a live performance in which the performer plunges into her dark subconscious onstage, while a feature film inundates the entire stage. The film blends in the set design forcing a dream to coexist with reality, and a human touch to hold hands with a cinematic cut - two worlds unfolding in unison before the eyes of the audience.

FeArs

Fears I have learned to ride, down heartlessly rumoured around

Seeing all the sounds fade in my eye, all in a sea of danger

I want to accept defeat again, on the chin but it's a new day

In the sunlight, out of the fears

You ain't around, hardly the time

I learn to see out of the corner

You in the sun cheating the lonesome

Call on the day, try to remember

I'm not the one, who had the number

Calling you out I do wanna see

Haven't you heard, holding a song in me

It's alright, with me, I love the same way alone again..

Red A

Red is the color of blood, rubies and strawberries. Next to orange at the end of the visible spectrum of light, red is commonly associated with danger, sacrifice, passion, fire, beauty, blood, anger, national socialism, socialism, communism, and in China and many other cultures, with happiness.

The word red comes from the Old English rēd. The word can be further traced to the Proto-Germanic rauthaz and the Proto-Indo European root reudh-. In Sanskrit, the word rudhira means red or blood. In the Akkadian language of Ancient Mesopotamia and in the modern Inuit language of Eskimos, the word for red is the same word as "like blood".

The words for 'colored' in Latin (coloratus) and Spanish (colorado) both also mean 'red.' whereas in Portuguese the word for red is vermelho, which comes from Latin "vermiculus", meaning "little worm".

In the Russian language, the word for red, Кра́сный (krasniy), comes from the same old Slavic root as the words for "beautiful"—красивый (krasiviy) and "excellent"—прекрасный (prekrasniy). Thus Red Square in Moscow, named long before the Russian Revolution, meant simply "Beautiful Square". [ source ]

Venue of shooting: Mount Parnitha

Parnitha suffered extensive damage from a wildfire on Thursday, June 28, 2007 around the morning and noon hours, continuing for several days and burning approximately 56 km² of land; one of the worst recorded wildfires in the prefecture after that of Penteli. The magnitude of the devastation was unforeseen. A smaller fire had, however, taken place in the 1960s.

The fire consumed forests in two prefectures. Firefighters, helicopters, and planes were brought into action across the mountain area and its edges fighting the enormous blaze, which took days to contain. It spread rapidly with the help of intense winds, and intensified into the northwestern edges of Greater Athens, including both Ano Liosia and towns and villages such as Fyli, near Thrakomakedones, Pyli and both Skoura and Schimatari north of the mountain.

From Athens, inhabitants could see the mountainside burning throughout the night. In Schimatari in Boeotia, it ruined several acres of forest and businesses. The fire claimed an 80% proportion of the rare Greek Fir and Aleppo Pine forest, 150 animals of the red deer population (an endangered species), birds, and other rare animals.

The remains of the green firs and pines are sporadically located around its edges. The smoke from the massive destruction formed a line that traveled east over Attica, southern Euboea, Chios, to the edge of Turkey, at a distance of approximately 350 km. [ source ]
