ROOMS 2014

ROOMS 2014
Contemporary Art Show

Kappatos Gallery presents from 13 to 28 February 2014, for the fourteenth time since 1999, the annual contemporary art exhibition, ROOMS 2014 at St George Lycabettus hotel, in Dexameni-Kolonaki.

In one of the most popular and historical exhibitions of contemporary art, 20 curators, art historians and art theorists, choose an artist or artist group each and present them in hotel rooms. Twenty five different artists take part with sound, photography and visual art installations, painting, sculpture, projects, design, performances, films, etc.

The exhibition ROOMS expands on a whole floor of the hotel, where each artist or group is shown in a room, with the hotel room transformed into the private space of the artist. In this way a great opportunity is given for the documentation of contemporary trends and perspectives in visual arts, while a creative dialogue is initiated.

The choice of the space of a hotel for the organisation of this exhibition has been a combination of priorities, such as the independent showcase of artists and at the same time, the need for each artwork to claim and acquire its own -both private and public- space, in complete accord to the character and the meaning of the current conditions.

The space of the hotel constitutes a facility with a historical structure and a social role in the framework of the urban environment; a space to visit, a space of meeting and getting to know, a space for rest and communication. Together with the strict mode of function that is the temporary hosting of the city’s visitors, the accommodation of professional agendas and activities of leisure take place. In the case of the exhibition ROOMS there is an extra, unprecedented use: the accommodation of artworks. Thus the social role of the hotel is expanded and acquires an artistic and communicative element; it becomes the podium for artists to address the major public. For many of them indeed, the magnificent space of St George Lycabettus hotel, lying in one of the most central and most wonderful points of Athens, is a great opportunity to create artworks especially for the exhibition, related to the varied functions of the hotel as a signifier of passage, speculation and amusement.

St George Lycabettus hotel highly estimates art and relentlessly continues to support and promote cultural activities through participating for the umpteenth time in this particular organisation, hence approaching the fields of contemporary art and critical thinking.

Rooms 2013

ROOMS2013
St George Lycabettus

Kappatos Gallery, organised, curated and presented the annual Contemporary Art Show “ROOMS2013” in the “St George Lycabettus” Hotel, in Dexameni, Kolonaki, Athens, its thirteenth edition since 1999.

In one of the most popular contemporary art shows, 20 curators, art historians, architects, theaterologists, choreographers, select each one a first-time shown artist or team of artists, that will be presented in the rooms of a floor in this hotel. In this show, the 30 artists participating will show paintings, drawing and sculptural works, installations, architectural projects, design, performances, projections, films, and other works, individually in each room transforming it to a personal space.

The choice of an alternative space, a hotel, for this show, was the result not only from the need of an autonomous presentation of the artists in the same location but also from the need of the contemporary artwork to occupy his own private and at the same time public space, in complete equivalence and harmony with its character and meaning of our times.

The hotel is a characteristic public space with certain structure, operation and social role in the framework of a city, as a place of visit, rest, meeting, acquaintance, communication. In its everyday operation, it is occupied mainly by “foreigners”, but also by local people who for their free time.

During the show, another dimension to the hotel will be added: the hosting of artistic work. Thus the social role of the hotel is extended acquiring a cultural and communicational character as it becomes a place for artists to communicate with the wide public who will visit and will “live together” with the artworks in the same space these days.

For many of the artists, the marvellous and hospitable space of the Hotel St George Lycabettus situated in one of the most beautiful areas in the centre of Athens, constitutes an opportunity to create artworks especially for this show, and the hotel to operate as a “art hospitable space”.
