Remap3 one

ReMap3
An international contemporary art programme
Kerameikos-Metaxourgeio, Athens, Greece
12 September – 30 October 2011

ReMap is an international contemporary art platform open and free to the public, which is held bi annually in the area of Kerameikos-Metaxourgeio in Athens, in tandem with the Athens Biennial. It is organized by ReMapKM, a not-for-profit organization.

ReMapKM’s goal is to create an alternative platform for the production and experiencing of contemporary art within the urban context, to present an interactive environment within a cultural framework and to enhance Athens’s positioning in the international contemporary art scene.

In its third incarnation, this year’s ReMap3 will be serving as a meeting place for over 250 artists, art historians and curators from around the world. KM’s own artistic community will also be represented within the 30 independent and the 25 gallery projects comprising this year’s ReMap.

ANDREAS MELAS PROJECTS / HELENA PAPADOPOULOS, ATHENS / BERLIN

Andreas Melas Projects and Helena Papadopoulos are very pleased to present
new photographic work by Michele Abeles.

Abeles’s work is concerned not simply with the male form but also with the conventions and possibilities of the still life and the photographic medium. Within the confines of her studio, Abeles has developed an inscrutable, yet strangely recognizable vocabulary of studio props -potted plants, empty wine bottles, decontextualized letters and numbers-often coexisting with elaborate arrangements of Plexiglas and colored gels that generate the illusion of Photoshop intervention, despite the fact that her images are created entirely in-camera. As a result, the photographs appear to waffle ambiguously between a loving, ironic engagement with tired tropes and low-tech trickery of studio photography’s past, and an interest in the rabid ecleticism and psychotropic visuality of our digital present.

JOHANN KOENIG, BERLIN / JOHANNES WOHNSEIFER

For ReMAP 3 Johann König, Berlin is pleased to present new paintings by Johannes Wohnseifer. The Colgne based artist investigates cultural phenomena and shifts of meaning using the mediums of sculpture, painting, collage, installation and film. In his current work the artist has also examined the significance of his personal past for his artistic practice, by incorporating objects and ephemera derived from his immediate surroundings. Subject matter is as varied as the announcements from contemporary galleries for upcoming exhibitions, deconstructed found texts, and cardboard paintings, recycling the refuse of exhibition making and studio practice. In Wohnseifer’s work pop-cultural phenomena and personal experience are consistently inextricably interwoven.
