Around the wall

Berlin Wall

The Berlin Wall (German: Berliner Mauer) was a barrier constructed by the German Democratic Republic (GDR, East Germany) starting on 13 August 1961, that completely cut off (by land) West Berlin from surrounding East Germany and from East Berlin.

The barrier included guard towers placed along large concrete walls, which circumscribed a wide area (later known as the "death strip") that contained anti-vehicle trenches, "fakir beds" and other defenses. The Eastern Bloc claimed that the wall was erected to protect its population from fascist elements conspiring to prevent the "will of the people" in building a socialist state in East Germany.

In practice, the Wall served to prevent the massiveemigration and defection that marked Germany and the communist Eastern Bloc during the post-World War II period.

The Berlin Wall was officially referred to as the "Anti-Fascist Protection Rampart" (German: Antifaschistischer Schutzwall) by GDR authorities, implying that neighbouring West Germany had not been fully de-Nazified.

The West Berlin city government sometimes referred to it as the "Wall of Shame"—a term coined by mayor Willy Brandt—while condemning the Wall's restriction on freedom of movement. Along with the separate and much longer Inner German border (IGB) that demarcated the border between East and West Germany, both borders came to symbolize the "Iron Curtain" that separated Western Europe and the Eastern Bloc during the Cold War.

In 1989, a series of radical political changes occurred in the Eastern Bloc, associated with the liberalization of the Eastern Bloc's authoritarian systems and the erosion of political power in the pro-Soviet governments in nearby Poland and Hungary.

After several weeks of civil unrest, the East German government announced on 9 November 1989 that all GDR citizens could visit West Germany and West Berlin. Crowds of East Germans crossed and climbed onto the wall, joined by West Germans on the other side in a celebratory atmosphere.

Over the next few weeks, a euphoric public and souvenir hunters chipped away parts of the wall; the governments later used industrial equipment to remove most of the rest. The physical Wall itself was primarily destroyed in 1990. The fall of the Berlin Wall paved the way for German reunification, which was formally concluded on 3 October 1990. [ source ]

Caribou

I live cement
I hate this street
Give dirt to me
I bite lament

This human form
Where I was born
I now repent

Repent
Re-pe-ent

Give me white
Ground to run
And foregone
Lets me knife

Knife me lets
I will get
What I like

Repent

Caged Bird

The wind did blow
Across the valley
So we can run
Under illusion

This one dream
I see is true
The caged bird
Sings the blues
For you

I know where we can fly
Into, into thin air
Something to believe
Or beware
Into thin air

Something to believe
Or beware
Into thin air
Oh I know where we can fly
Hold on
Oh someway
To break the cage
And route the Rage to love
Love

Oh for so many nights
A prayer to breach
That star you'll
Reach tonight
Into, into thin air
Something to believe
Or beware

Into thin air
No light despair
Into thin air
Something to believe
Hold on
It's all a dream
It seems to

Feel the air you breathe
There's so much needing
We are believing
Hold on

Stealing Tomorrow

Is this place shaking, or is it me?
what can "I feel" mean without you?
and everything become more true
the more that I believe in you
stealing tomorrow

I don't care what you think
gonna take it away
while I am stealing tomorrow from today
stealing tomorrow from today

take it away

and I built this all around me
  Irefuse to let anyone through
oh no, not even you

and it's like someone else is driving
like this body isn't mine
changed myself without even telling you
or even asking and i need relief
'cause I can't be sober and win you over
  Irelayed my temperature

you have to get out of here
and you don't even know half of it
  Icannot turn it off
  I don't have a switch for that
and haven't crash landed yet
haven't crash landed yet

stealing tomorrow from today

Please Be Happy

It's too late now, we can't change anything
The ties that bind us have been weakened

The bond between us though is forever
but this distance now is as much as I can bear

I don't care what you say
I'm going to carry you in my heart
and you'll stay there forever.

I'd like to put it all back together again
but I can't
I want to hold you
and make it alright.

I think about all those years
and I cherish them
but our careless love
we should have known
would break us.

Please be happy.
Please be strong.
